DELICIOUSLY ELLA THE PLANT-BASED COOKBOOK
This new cookbook brings together all Deliciously Ella’s best recipes over the last six years, and their most requested recipes from the Deli – like the almond Victoria cake, green Thai curry, baked sweet potato falafel, peanut butter slices, and the most requested deli recipe, their famous cornbread (all of which we have made and remade from the book). This new book is by far my favourite of her four books. You can see how much she and her team have evolved and grown over the last six years. She started her food blog in 2012 to journal her path to wellness from an autoimmune disease through eating good whole foods. Her genuine love and enthusiasm for simple, tasty, plant based eating, and the growing realisation that the key to good health is in nature, brought her on an incredible journey to where she is today. Since then she has written four cookbooks, built recipe aps, opened London based delis, launched a variety of widely available food product ranges, and qualified as a yoga teacher!

I love how the book is so easy to navigate. Rather than the traditional breakfast, lunch dinner chapters it is divided into the main categories of plant based eating – salads, falafels, burgers, soups, stews and curries . Recipes don’t need to be boxed into certain times of the day. They can be lunch, they can be dinner and they can even be breakfast (there is also a separate breakfast section at the front). When I’m planning out my food prep for the week it usually consists of a big pot of beanie hotpot for the weekend, soups for after school lunches, a two day batch of either falafel or burgers with salads, and a two day batch of either stew or a curry. With Friday as our wild card day where I take requests and reserve the right to decline the request!

Their philosophy is to eat real food with uncomplicated recipes using easy to find ingredients – making it accessible to take their amazing plant based recipes beyond their delis, books and aps, and onto our dinner table. We visited their Weighthouse Street deli on a recent trip to London and I have to say it was one of the highlights of our trip!

THE RICH ROLL PODCAST
This podcast is one of my favourite podcast. It is one of the worlds most highly acclaimed podcasts with over 45 million downloads. It has been running since 2013 and already has nearly 400 episodes ready and waiting for you to browse through. For those who haven’t encountered Rich Roll yet you are in for a treat. He is a plant based ultra-endurance athlete, wellness leader and entrepreneur with a focus on living an authentic life, focusing on health span not life span, and building inclusive communities. He is a complete gent and has admirable interviewing skills, which affords him to effortlessly gets the best out of each carefully chosen guest, each with a life lesson to share in every episode. He has a wide variety of guests, including some of the most progressive thinkers in the field of wellness. The episodes are long format which give Rich the space to delve deep into the inspiring topics. This is the perfect example of how podcasts have come into the forefront as a platform to keep yourself educated, informed and inspired by the most current research from the most brilliant minds.

FOUR SIGMATIC
Like many others I’ve tried my fare share of the latest superfoods. Some with well founded health benefits, and others nothing above what you’d more easily and affordably get with fresh fruit and veg. The humble mushroom is one of the world’s most nutrient-dense food. It goes beyond being just a superfood, it is also an adaptogen, which means it adapts to your needs.   • Lion’s Mane is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune supporting, enhances cognitive function and neurogenesis – the growth of fresh new brain cells. Our digestive system and brain are connected by an extensive network of neurons. Lion’s Mane molecular compounds enhances this connection between the two.

THE PLANTPOWER WAY ITALIA
I love everything these two creative beings produce – from podcasts to cookbooks and life journey memoires. I first heard of Rich Roll through The Happy Pear. Rich Roll is an Ultra Marathon runner and his wife Julie Piatt is a spiritual leader and entrepreneur. They are testament to the benefits of leading a whole food, plant based diet. I was already eating mainly plant based when I first encountered them, but I didn’t yet have enough information to feel it was the right choice for the rest of my family. Their first cookbook ‘The Plantpower Way’ gives lots of delicious and surprisingly simple plant based recipes, along with incredibly significant and decisive information about the health benefits of going plant based for any age, the impact agriculture has on the environment, and how easy it is for each and every one of us to make a difference.

Their new book is inspired by their yearly retreats they run in Italy and Julie’s love of Italian food. Browsing through this beautiful book will tickle your taste buds and finally give you the answers to how to make vegan versions of your favourite Italian foods, melty cheese and all!

VIVOBAREFOOT
I practice the two extreme disciplines for my feet – yoga and running. They relish in times when I roll out my mat, lift and spread my toes, and pay them lots of attention to them in my yoga practice. Then they get a bit of a shock when I wedge them into over cushioned, latest technology runner, and pound the pavement on my morning runs. Leaving them feeling confused, and on more than one occasion, laid up with an injury. Vivobarefoots principle is to reconnect people with their feet and nature. Taking inspiration from indigenous tribes they invented a shoe that gives minimum interference between the soles of the feet and the sensorial experience of the surface we tread on. Our feet were designed to be muscular and supple, and feed proprioceptive signals to the brain to allow the body to move accordingly. Shoes are often over cushioned and narrow fitting which weakens the muscles of our feet and displaces the natural bone structure.

When you first experience wearing your Vivos, you immediately notice you walk with such awareness of ‘walking’ – your stride will change, and your movements will become more fluid as you adjust to finding the support of the reawakened muscles. Walking become a lesson in being in your body and in the present moment. I highly recommend giving this new way of moving a go.

YOGANDHA
I absolutely love these wellness oils. They are created by yoga teacher Sinead Duffy out of such genuine care, extensive research, and deep belief in the many benefits of essential oils. The oils are 100% natural, vegan and handmade in Ireland. I couldn’t decide which of the body oils I loved most so I bought all three, and use them everyday depending on what mood takes me. I use Muscle Soothe after my yoga practice or a morning run to restore tired muscles; Relax after a long soak in an Epsom bath to bring a bit of calm to my day; and Detox in the mornings to wake me up and get the circulation going.

I also incorporate the three rollerballs into the start or the end of my yoga classes to bring Grounding, Balance or Salute (energy) – depending on the theme of my class. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in yoga and meditation practices to calm the nervous system, bring you into the present moment, and deepen the mind, body and spirit connection,.

RECIPES FOR HAPPINESS
These guys have rapidly become an irish institution and are ambassadors for living a healthy and happy life. While they are vegan, they are very careful to advocate an all inclusive message of ‘eat more veg’. This is their third cookbook and I have anticipated it’s arrival since they announced its launch this May. It does not disappoint! It is jam packed with easy, user-friendly and incredibly tasty dishes. There is lots of the classic recipes from their YouTube channel, like Sheparless Pie and Three Bean Coconut Curry, which are staples in our house. They’ve also been very brave and tackled making vegan hot dogs and chicken nuggets in their ‘I cant believe its not’ section. My favourite section is ‘Fermentastic!’ which gives an intro to the art of fermentation, and simple reasons why fermentation is the king of all food for gut health. The only bread we eat in our house is fermented sourdough. Once you get into the rhythm of it, it becomes part of your routine and a family pet.

I have to admit when I first encountered the lads I found their energy levels a bit scary. But there is no room for the Irishness of softly, softly, heads down when it comes to changing lives and making a difference in the often confusing world of healthy living. They are a testament to staying genuine to who you are and keeping a sharp focus on your mission.

YOGALAND PODCAST
I can’t quite call this a May Favourite Find because I have been listening, and relishing, every single of the 103 podcast from Yogaland since they started! Andrea Ferretti is a yoga writer based in San Francisco, who has over ten years experience with writing and interviewing inspirational yogis for Yoga Journal. With all this knowledge she launch Yogaland, and brings thought provoking weekly interviews with many of the big names in the world of yoga. There is a wide range of yoga related topics, for practitioners and teachers alike. It’s an absolute must, there is no other yoga podcast that comes close to it!

Some of my favourite episodes are her interviews with Jason Crandell, her other half. They go deep into the practice, and particularly as a teacher, I’ve learnt so much from these episodes – these are ones to relisten to a few times with a notebook and pen. Jason has a mind blowingly extensive knowledge of yoga, with a passion for anatomy and alignment as a gateway to a deeper understanding of yoga on and off the mat. I look forward to finally training with him this September in Flow Studio, Belfast.

CHINA GEL
I first encountered China Gel in a yoga workshop where the teacher rubbed it onto the back of our necks after a long practice and I was hooked! The tingling sensation is both cooling and warming and your muscles simply melt. It is a natural herbal remedy that helps relax your muscles and encourage fresh blood flow – which aids faster recover if you have an injury, or releases any held tension from daily stresses or movement and exercise. It contains seven natural herbs – menthol, camphor, lavender, angelica, ginseng, aloe vera and witch hazel – giving it a invigorating scent and an easily absorbent texture. I use it everyday, after my practice or a run, on any areas that feel tired or have had a deep stretch. I use it with Yogandha oils particularly on my legs to make sure they are restored and ready to run, walk and practice the next day.

China Gel is currently not available in health shops in Dublin. I loved it so much I applied to be a stockist so I could keep using it myself! It’s available in my Yoga Shop in 4oz or 6oz.

WANDERING INTO WELLNESS – PODCAST
I’m a big fan of The Hopsack in Rathmines, Dublin. Not only is it our biggest health store, but they have an endless wealth of knowledge and huge experience in the field of all things wellness. There’s isn’t a question they can’t answer. Whenever I pop in I usually have an embarrassing long list of questions, from recommendations, to product usage, and they never fail to have an answer. They are incredibly proactive and are a dab hand at spotting a confused customer. They’re also completely on the ball with staying up to date with the ever changing trends in wellness and nutrition.

Hopsack homage aside I was very excited to spot owner Finn Murray and fellow yoga teacher Lydia Sasse, have recently started a new podcast which brings me to my first Favourite Finds for April. I listen to podcasts everyday on my early morning walks. There is some amazing podcasts that I follow but none of them Irish. When it comes to health some of it translates internationally, but when you’re looking to source locally, and get recommendations, this podcast is a very welcome addition. That said, it has plenty to offer no matter where you are living. They have a wealth of knowledge between them and an amazing ability to share so much wisdom in a conversational fashion. They record the podcasts out in different locations in nature to inspire their conversations – birdies singing in the background included. I look forward to listening to lots more captivating topics from this pair and highly recommend you subscribe to their podcast.

MOVE TRAIN NOURISH
This is a book I’ve anticipated since the first time I encountered Dominic many, many years ago. He is one of those rare genuinely kind people who wants to help you find a happy and healthy life within your abilities. He is unbelievably well read, and more importantly, knows how to translate this knowledge into his innovative method. Grainne is an inspirational role model. Her ‘fundamentals of wellness’ completely reflect how I strive to live too. Her wisdom on wellness is boundless. She offers many expert tips that I look forward to reading over several times and incorporating into my routine. Her recipes are easy to follow, have simple ingredients and have a ‘eat real food’ philosophy.

Dominic and Grainne start by introducing their three pillars in exercise – mobility, strength and conditioning. I love their refreshing views on the importance of mobility, which is often forgotten in training. Similarly in yoga ‘strength’ is the forgotten element. For any activity to be beneficial for longevity there has to be equal strength and stretch. They believe in a balanced approach to fitness – working hard on the days where you’re full of beans, and doing less on days where you’re tired. In my twenties I trained too hard and rewired my brain to ignore pain triggers, which inevitably left my nursing many injuries. Listening to your body, and being kind to yourself, is something that has taken a long time for me to rebuild and is the cornerstone of their method of training.

I wish them all the best with their well awaited book, 20 years in the making. I recommend you pop out and secure yourself a copy soon. It’s climbing up the top 10 books chart and is selling out fast!

BOSH
These two London based lads, Ian and Henry, are geniuses! They champion the ‘eat more plants’ movement with completely fresh eyes. Not only do they make it look simple, having tried a few of their Instagram recipes, it actually is simple! The recipes are easy to follow and their grasp of flipping plant based eating on its head is spectacular. The first recipe I tried was their very clever ‘Giant Hummus Mezze Traybake’ – where you sandwich tons of fabulous baked veg between wraps and bake it again. It was another level of tasty! I first encountered BOSH on Instagram. They’ve pioneered a new method of simplifying video recipeing, that leaves you drooling over your phone, and is fast becoming a very popular recipe method on Instagram. Wholefood plant based eating is in the middle of an exciting revolution and these guys, and our very own Happy Pear fellas, are leading the way. I can’t wait to get my hands on their cookbook and neither can my kiddies!

They have a huge following on Instagram and YouTube and have their first cookbook coming out on 19th April.
